Road Week Ahead: March 3 – March 7

Here’s what’s on tap for Lake County commuters this week: changing traffic patterns on the Tri-State, wintry mix, and an early heads-up for community awareness.

Illinois Tollway commuter alert: The pothole patrol is back. Expect daytime lane closures on the Tri-State Tollway for several pothole repair projects on Monday.

Monday’s Tri-State lane closures include:

  • Northbound and southbound between Half-Day Road and Route 60, and near Route 176 (8 AM – 3 PM southbound, 7 AM – 3 PM northound) for pothole repair.
  • The leftmost lane will be closed between Willow Road and Sanders Road between 9 AM and 1 PM (southbound closure to 3 PM) for various projects. The southbound closure is scheduled each day through Friday, March 7.
  • The leftmost lane will be closed in various locations northbound from Route 60 to Stearns School Road, starting at 5 AM and continuing until afternoon for barrier wall construction.
  • Expect various overnight lane closures northbound and southbound starting at 8 PM. All southbound lanes are expected to be open by 5 AM for Tuesday morning’s rush.

More lane closure details are available on the Illinois Tollway’s website.

As part of the ongoing Rebuild and Widen project, traffic shifts and preparations for a southbound counterflow lane are underway. Starting in March, one lane of southbound traffic will be temporarily shifted onto the northbound side. Per the ISTHA, “three lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction throughout construction as southbound traffic is shifted into the counterflow lane, median shoulder and left-most lane allowing for the rebuild and widen of the southbound lanes. Lane closures will be permitted during off-peak hours to minimize the impact to traffic.”

Here’s the Lake County DOT roadwork update report and Illinois DOT construction update report. Expect the resumption of several projects as the weather warms.

According to the Interstate 94 weather report, March’s first Monday greets us with a “wintry mix” of rain, sleet and snow. The other days follow in a procession of below-freezing and below-normal temps and another week of winter-weary attitudes.

Early Warning: Here’s a heads-up for the Lake County Community Forums (or is it Fora?), which begin next Monday, March 10. First up is the Central Lake County Forum, scheduled for next Monday at 6 PM. Details are listed in the “What’s Going On?” Lake County Motorist calendar and on the Lake County website. Here’s your chance to meet local legislators and planners, and have your say in Lake County affairs.
