Russell Road re-route during tollway construction

Chris asked for information about the next stage of Tri-State Tollway construction:

Q.: “My co-workers and I are looking for information of the upcoming road work just off I-94 southbound that merges into 41 just south of russell road. Signs are posted stating that construction will begin early March – we are seeing activity by the bridge. Will this exist [sic] be closed? What is the actual date and is there an alternate detour planned? I could not find any information about this pending construction. Many Wisconsin motorists travel this route heading south on 94 and take the left hand lane exit to enter 41. Any information concerning this construction would help us figure are new route and help stop back-up traffic that could occur.”

A. : The next stage of the Tri-State Rebuild and Widen project will include construction from the Wisconsin state line to Russell Road. Southbound construction from Russell to Grand was completed in 2007. According to the Illinois Tollway’s North Tri-State project page:

Rebuild & Widen work in the northbound lanes from Grand Avenue to Russell Road is scheduled to begin in spring 2008 and will utilize a counterflow lane between Grand Avenue and the Wisconsin state line. The southbound exit to U.S. Route 41 will be closed while the northbound lanes are under construction. A detour will be posted, directing southbound I-94 traffic to exit at Russell Road , continuing westbound on Russell Road to Old Route 41, and south on Old Route 41 to reach U.S. Route 41.

Here’s a map of the lane configurations that will be in use from Half-Day Road to the Wisconsin state line, including the temporary Russell Road access changes.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen an exact start date listed on any documents. The Illinois Tollway publishes daily closures and construction updates on their website; here’s the News link for the North Tri-State project.

Here’s hoping you and your colleagues are able to find manageable routes to work during the construction.
