Loss of lane brings newfound frustration

A funny thing happened along Lake-Cook Road east of the Tri-State last week: One of the lanes was taken away. Seemingly, everyone was caught off-guard. Traffic was backed up for miles, with a mix of motorists and Pace shuttle buses going nowhere fast.

The long-term yet temporary lane closure was planned as part of the Tri-State Rebuild and Widen project. The Village of Deerfield describes it thus on their website:

Traffic on Lake Cook Road will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes in each direction from west of the southbound I-294 entrance and exit ramps to east of Wilmot Road. Additionally, the dual left turn lanes at the Lake Cook [tollway entrance] will be reduced to single left turn lanes during construction. Delays on Lake Cook Road are expected.

They weren’t kidding about that last part.

Lake-Cook Road will be a roadwork magnet for the remainder of the summer. Some of the projects:

  • A planned project to widen the road from Pfingsten Road to Waukegan Road is expected to commence this year, further snarling summertime Ravinia traffic.
  • Northbound Wilmot Road will be closed for water main repairs for three weeks. This closure was due to begin March 24, but has since been delayed.

Those that take Lake-Cook for work or play may want to consider Deerfield Road, Dundee Road, or staying home as alternates.

OK, that last one may not be rational.

But don’t say Deerfield didn’t warn ya.

Anyone know what that huge accident that happened yesterday was about? It was at the intersection of Weiland and Lake-Cook.

  3. I know the feeling, kilax! It will be a looong summer.

I’m sorry Russ, but I haven’t heard anything about that particular accident. If I find out anything, I’ll post an update here in the comments.

  4. […] Wilmot Road will close April 21 for approximately three weeks. The closure has been forewarned for several weeks, and was delayed from its original March start date. The Village of Deerfield has […]
