Road Salt Status Report: Winter 2008

Winter 2008 has been marked by heavy snowfall, taxing suburban salt supplies. Villages have enacted various methods to stretch the dwindling supply including salting only main roads and intersections, salting only after snowfall has ended, and (most commonly) mixing salt with sand.

To answer frequent questions regarding who’s out of salt and who’s not, here is a guide based on media reports. A question mark in the “Salt Status” column indicates that I haven’t received or located any information as to that municipality’s road salt levels.

The City of Chicago and Illinois Department of Transportation both say that they have plenty of road salt, but they ain’t sharing it with the suburbs. Things are tough all over.
