Playing catch-up

Before we begin, let’s get caught up on a few Lake County Transportation topics.

Tri-State Rebuild and Widen: Trucking right along, although I can’t resist asking “Are we there yet?” about the completion date. The northbound express lane recently disappeared and there are three all-access northbound lanes now.

Route 120: The bypass seems to be the thing. Volozen shares info from the Daily Herald: Consensus Reached on 120 Vision. Route 120 Corridor Planning Council has the details in their October 16 press release.

Route 53: Aside from the “yes” vote registered on the 2009 referendum, I haven’t heard much else about 53. Note that the referendum’s passage didn’t mean 53 was going to happen any time soon, but Lake County voters have made their opinions known. Let me know when the earth movers show up.

Construction: There’s quite a bit of it. Methinks federal stimulus money is spurring construction jobs and roadwork-induced commuter headaches well into late fall/early winter this year. Hopefully a bit of short-term motorist pain will give way to long-term motorist relief, at least until the housing market picks up and population increases.  Lake County Passage’s text-only Mobile web page provides a quick glance of what’s underway. Commuters are especially delayed by the various projects around Rt. 22, which coupled with limited escape routing through woodsy burbs makes this road a much-groaned-about topic.

The ten worst traffic backups in Lake County

Sometimes it can feel as if all of Lake County is one gridlocked, bottlenecked, backed-up road, but everything is relative. There are backups, and there are eye-rolling, engine-temperature-rising, steering-wheel-slapping brake sessions to set watches by. Year-round jam spots, not caused by temporary road construction, frequent enough to include in navigation directions: “Make a right on 83 to avoid the Route 60 traffic jam”.

From Deerfield to Mundelein, these are ten of the worst.

Road Week Ahead: February 25 – February 29

Here’s what’s on tap for Lake County commuters this leap week.

Illinois Tollway construction update: Monday morning marks the start of a new traffic pattern on the northern Tri-State Tollway. As part of the ongoing Rebuild and Widen project, traffic shifts and preparations for a southbound counterflow lane began February 22. Starting in March, one lane of southbound traffic will be temporarily shifted onto the northbound side.

Two right lanes on the northbound Tri-State will be closed between Duffy Lane and Route 176 from 7 PM Monday night to 8 AM Tuesday morning. Also scheduled for Monday night are northbound single-lane closures between Route 137 and Stearns School Road. All other construction continues as planned.

The Illinois DOT construction update report doesn’t reflect this, but those Half-Day Road log cabins were finally torn down a few weeks ago. I haven’t driven that route in a while and was unaware of their disappearance. I also didn’t realize they were the source of so much chatter in Lincolnshire, but I’m new to these parts.

Here’s the Lake County DOT roadwork update report. Several projects currently on hold for winter will start up in a few weeks.

Interstate 94 weather report. Snow showers are predicted for Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday’s temps will be abnormally frigid.

Road Week Ahead: February 4 – February 8

Here’s what’s on tap for Lake County commuters this week: Road closures, Election Day, and more stuff from the sky.

Illinois DOT construction update report. Of note: Route 22 building demolition described in part as follows:

Building demolition of three single family two-story log cabins, one garage and three other buildings located on IL 22 (Half Day Road) in Lincolnshire…

Does this refer to the log cabin on Route 22 just east of Olde Half Day Road? I’ve been wondering about the story behind this house. Might anyone have info?

Here’s the Lake County DOT roadwork update report. According to the Daily Herald, Lake County road improvements may be fast-tracked thanks to the recently approved transit bailout package (remember that?)

Illinois Tollway construction update: Off-peak lane closures on Lake-Cook Road from 9 AM to 3PM, February 4 through 8.

Oh yeah, Tuesday is Election Day. Article: Lake County Board candidates spar over roadwork.

Interstate 94 weather report. “Metra weather” ahead: Monday and Tuesday are predicted to be messy; take public transit if you can. All the routes are running now.
